International
Exhibition of Art Video and Cinema Beyond
Invideo,
the annual exhibition dedicated to art video
and "cinema beyond" which brings
to Milan the top national and international
productions in the realm of video art and
digital cinema of research and advanced
experimentation, joined forces with "Stati
Liquidi": in its 14th edition. The
two initiatives had been enjoyed an increasingly
successful connection - through video works,
projects and events - for some time. Invideo
decided to highlight this special relationship
in 2004. In this year's edition 50 works
were selected, out of 600 previewed, to
which were added titles in various other
sections for a total 120 videos.
The programme
was also crammed with screenings and meetings.
The opening night took place in Stuttgart
on 9th November. Studio Azzurro's Nodi del
Mediterraneo, already shown with success
in a past edition of Invideo, was screened.
The Italian video video artist Monica Petracci
was also in attendance. In Milan, the numerous
events on the programme included: a meeting
with French Michel Chion, the eclectic cinema
critic, musician, pupil of Pierre Schaeffer,
collaborator of Robert Cahen and author
of crtitical essays on Charlie Chaplin,
Jacques Tati, David Lynch; a meeting with
Gene Youngblood, the US theoretician on
expanded cinema; a meeting with Francisco
Ruiz De Infante (Paesi Baschi), one of the
most promising and important young artists
on the international scene; German Bjorn
Melhus, maker of works concentrating on
the exploration of the body and its mutations,
linked not just to cybernetics but also
between the masculine and feminine; a work
on three screens by Issac Julien, already
shown in a number of important international
festivals as well as alongside his works
in the Tate Gallery in London and the Museum
of Contemporary Art of Chicago.
In addition:
- Pagine di viaggio n. 1 (Pages of Journey
no.1), a video by Giuseppe Baresi with Giuseppe
Cederna narrating;
- the world premier of two new episodes
of Cartographies, a mix of choreography,
video and urban studies created by Philippe
Saire's contemporary dance company;
- the Italian premier of "Codice aperto"
("Open Code"), a video dance by
Enzo Procopio and Luca Scarzella made with
five dancers in the environmental park La
Marrana;
- a tribute to the 1980s by Gianni Toti,
one of the most important video artists
in the world and a pioneer of electronic
art in Italy;
- the by now regular appointment Poetronica,
a collage of independent Italian video;
- a tribute to Living Theatre with an important
documentary by Dirk Szusies on nearly half
a century of activity by the historic theatre
group.
And finally,
the section dedicated to music video videos,
which, after the retrospective on Chris
Cunningham, Anton Corbijn and Michel Gondry,
this year screened works by Floria Sigismondi,
a video artist, photographer and maker of
videos for Marilyn Manson, Tricky, Sigur
Ros and David Bowie.
Filmmakers,
critics and performers hanno flocked to
Invideo. As in previous years, the videos
screened were acquired by the Province of
Milan's "Medialogo".
In addition,
previously unpublished texts by Chion and
Youngblood appeared in the catalogue, alongside
contributions from critics on the events
and meetings and the profiles on the selected
videos.
