ARCHIVES: IN BETWEEN CONSERVATION AND BEING BORN ANEW

In 2013 videoart will celebrate its 50th anniversary, if it assumes as its symbolic birthdate the exhibition at the Parnass Gallery in Wuppertal, Germany in 1963, when Nam June Paik exhibited distorted televion images, “inventing” abstract TV. In the last few decades video works, from classics to innovations, have acummulated, in Italy too, in a series of collections and archives. From its very beginnings, INVIDEO has dealt in various ways with video archives, building up in its turn one of the most flourishing in Europe by comparing other experiences of the collection, valorization and digitalization of videoart works and art videos, in an effort to sort out the important issues relating to conservation and also promotion, with all the problems linked to their circulation over the web.

These are the topics discussed by Luciano Giaccari, founder of the historical videothèque bearing his name (Varese), which in 2012 celebrates forty years of activity; Mario Gorni of the archive Care Of (Milan); Paolo Rosa of  tudio Azzurro (Milan); Ranuccio Sodi from Show Biz (Milan) who will explained “Memoria magnetica”, a project that aims to recover unused electronic materials; Silvia Moretti for La Casa Totiana, Rome (which is digitalizing the video works of Gianni Toti); Paolo Simoni of “Home Movies - Archivio Nazionale del Film di Famiglia” (National Archive for Family Films), Bologna. Thanks to collaboration by this latter archive, Toti’s personal and amateur films are being recovered: some precious clips are presented here for the first time ever. The session is coordinated by Romano Fattorossi, INVIDEO co-director, who will present the joint online archive project for the Lombardy festivals. (from INVIDEO 2012 catalogue)
